About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Objective
Revista Biomédica of the "Dr. Hideyo Noguchi" Regional Research Center of the Autonomous University of Yucatán has as its fundamental objective "To disseminate relevant scientific knowledge in the field of biomedicine through original scientific research whose content is reproducible by other authors and which represents a contribution to the development of science."
Focus and Scope
Revista Biomédica publishes the following types of manuscripts: original articles, review articles, brief communications, clinical cases, editorials, letters to the editor, academic profiles, and history of science.
Original articles are reports of results from clinical or experimental research on etiological, pathological, physiological, epidemiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects related to biomedicine. The research protocols from which these results were obtained must have been approved by the corresponding Ethics Committee; this should be indicated in the Materials and Methods section, and the authors must attach a copy of the approval decision.
Review articles are by invitation only; unsolicited contributions are welcome and subject to editorial review. They should contain detailed, up-to-date information on the topic addressed, with references no older than 5 years, except for classic or relevant references (which should not exceed 10% of the total references).
Clinical cases will present the author's experience with the diagnosis, clinical manifestations, treatment, and evolution of current-interest cases in clinical biomedicine, or present unusual clinical cases or previously undescribed clinical manifestations. The research protocols from which the results were obtained must be approved by the corresponding Ethics Committee, and the authors must attach a copy of the approval decision.
Brief communications will present clinical, experimental, or epidemiological results and findings in a concise format, as well as partial or short research projects that, due to their relevance, warrant rapid dissemination.
Editorials are by invitation only, although unsolicited contributions are welcome. These contributions present analyses and, generally, judgments on highly relevant and widely interesting topics in biomedicine, reflecting the author's ideology and stance on the subject.
Letters to the editor are brief communications containing critical opinions to support or critique the methods, analyses, or results of an article published in the journal. They offer suggestions for correcting errors, raise points overlooked by the authors, and provide additional information to support the work. They allow readers to communicate with the editorial team and the authors of the articles to ask questions, comment, critique, or request clarification.
Academic profiles present a summary of a researcher's most prominent aspects, as well as their academic and professional qualities that distinguish them through their work at an institution.
The history of science is a brief narrative that describes the process of transformation and evolution of experimentation from a scientific perspective. It explains the path that humankind has followed to find solutions to specific problems and understand aspects of reality.
Revista Biomédica may publish, in supplementary issues, papers presented at conferences, articles on topics of national and international relevance, or similar events in the field of biomedicine.

Peer Review Process
Revista Biomédica of the "Dr. Hideyo Noguchi" Regional Research Center of the Autonomous University of Yucatán, as a peer-reviewed journal, recognizes the need to rigorously and expeditiously review the manuscripts it receives for publication. The evaluation is conducted at several stages through blind peer review, as described below:
- The manuscript has been received, and an email has been sent to the authors acknowledging receipt and informing them that the review process has begun.
- Manuscripts undergo a preliminary and brief review by the editors to determine if the manuscript adheres to the journal's guidelines for authors and warrants external review. If the manuscript does not meet the established criteria for publication, the authors are notified of the reasons for its rejection. If the internal review is deemed relevant to the journal's subject area, the process continues.
- The evaluation process begins with a double-blind peer review. Three active researchers, either national or international, are selected to review the manuscript anonymously. Two positive reviews are required for the manuscript to be considered for publication.
- The manuscript is sent to the reviewers without identifying the authors, and they are given 3-4 weeks to submit their reviews.
- After the external review, the editor receives and prepares a document with the reviewers' comments and observations. This document is sent to the authors, who then decide whether to submit a revised version of their manuscript, incorporating the reviewers' feedback, or withdraw it from the process. If the authors decide not to continue, the manuscript is removed from the journal's database.
- If the authors wish to submit the revised version to continue the evaluation process, the editor assigns a submission period of approximately 1 to 2 weeks, depending on the extent of the required adjustments.
- When the author returns the revised manuscript, the editors review it. If the corrections are minor, the article can be published.
- If the corrections are major, the manuscript is sent to the reviewers, who will verify that the suggested corrections and adjustments have been made or taken into account. Each expert re-evaluates the article and informs the editor whether further adjustments are necessary or if they believe it is ready for publication.
- If the reviewers, or any of them, believe that further adjustments to the manuscript are still needed, the editor prepares a new document with the evaluations, ensuring anonymity, and sends it to the authors. The previous process is repeated until the reviewers deem the manuscript suitable for publication.
- Occasionally, the author(s) respond to the reviewers' comments to explain or clarify why certain suggested adjustments do not apply to the manuscript. In these cases, a blind dialogue is established between the reviewer and the author, mediated by the editorial committee, which serves as a forum for discussing and deliberating on the adjustments. However, the final decision rests with the expert reviewer.
- If the manuscript is rejected by the reviewers, the authors are informed that it will be withdrawn and are sent the reasons for the rejection. It is very rare for a manuscript to be accepted for publication without restrictions, recommendations, or suggestions from the reviewers. Very rarely is a manuscript accepted without any restrictions, recommendations, or suggestions from the evaluators to be published.
History of Revista Biomédica
Revista Biomédica is the scientific publication of the Regional Research Center "Dr. Hideyo Noguchi "of the Autonomous University of Yucatan.
Founded in 1990, the journal published its first issue in April of that year.
Born by the genuine initiative and the determined impulse of its then Director, Dr. Jorge Zavala Velázquez +, who conceived and managed the beginnings of this crusade.
"Our initial aim is to be a vehicle for union at the regional level. If this is true and we can reach a larger area, our expectation, our chimera, will have come true. "
Revista Biomédica contains original research and review articles, brief communications, clinical cases, editorials, letters to the editor, academic profiles, and a history of science. All submissions must be closely related to biomedicine, human health, and pathology. Articles written in Spanish or English are accepted.
In its origins, Revista Biomédica was published in printed form, with a quarterly periodicity (March, June, September and December), and in 2007 its periodicity changed to a four-month period (April, August and December). From volume 24, corresponding to the year 2013, its printed edition was interrupted after 23 uninterrupted years of publication. The ISSN of the printed edition is 0188-493X.
In keeping with the modern and responsible trend of many internationally important scientific journals, Revista Biomédica decided to publish an electronic version, which can be accessed at www.revistabiomedica.mx, at no cost. The link starts at page 1 of volume 6, corresponding to the period January-March 1995.
The technical data of the electronic version are: Number of Reservation of Rights to Exclusive Use 04-2016-102510354700-203 and ISSN 2007-8447.
